Thanksgiving 2011

Standard

I really enjoyed having a thankful theme to my posts these past few weeks. I may cheat and keep it going through Christmas because I feel like I have so many more things/people to be thankful for that never got mentioned here.

Our Thanksgiving weekend officially started last Wednesday and since then we’ve traveled 400+ miles, visited 3 homes, attended one 6th birthday party and two 1st birthday parties, went swimming, ate some amazing meals (none of which I prepared), visited with more family members and friends then I could count, saw the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild, watched my kids play with each of their cousins (no mean feat considering 2 of them live in Missouri!), put out all our Christmas lights and cut down our Christmas tree.

All in all, our weekend was just about perfect. Many, many thanks to all our friends and family who helped make it that way- we are so blessed to have you in our lives!

This morning, the stomach bug hit our house. This time, it was Beaner’s turn. Scorch was the one who had it 2 weeks ago- I really don’t understand how germs work in my house.  Unfortunately, I got a minor (I hope) case too- so this will be short and sweet.

Today I’m thankful for:

> Kids that can warn me before they get ill
> Kids that can run fast and get sick in the proper places
> Kids TV on Demand even if it does mean 2 straight hours of Dora.
>
A husband who was so freaked out over the thought of our 5 year old walking himself into school (mind you, I would have walked him to the front door), that he came home from work to take Scorch in himself.
>Scorch’s teacher who was kind enough to walk him to the car after school so I didn’t have to bring myself or my germy 3 year old into school to get him.
> Toast & flat soda. Amen.

What are you feeling thankful for today?

Happy (belated) Halloween

Standard

I tried to post last night, I swear. But the lure of the candy and my comfy warm couch was just too much to resist.

We had a great Halloween! No one had to wear a snow suit (always a real possibility), the kiddos got good candy (not an Almond Joy in sight!) and my little buggers remembered to actually say Trick or Treat and Thank You at all the homes we hit.

Scorch loved being a Solider although exactly what kind of solider he was was up for debate.  The Bean was the cutest Lady Bug in town even though she only kept on her wings 50% of the time.  We trick or treated with some of our oldest friends and the kids were so exciting they were shaking.

I’m calling Halloween 2011 a complete success- hope you can say the same!

Good & Bad

Standard

The Bad

> Scorch came home from school feeling fine and then proceeded to puke everywhere 2 hours later. When the Hubs wasn’t home. So I had to clean it up. By myself.  All that = my worst nightmare come to life.
> The Bean woke up 2 days ago at 5 am and decided she was up for the day. I begged to differ, so I made her stay in bed until she finally fell back asleep at 6:15 am.  Last night she woke up at 3 am and we had the same battle until 4:20 am.
> Because of the Bean’s sleep battles, I’ve been too damn tired to get up and out at 5:10 to work out, so I’m feeling like an exhausted  slug.
> It’s supposed to snow tomorrow.

The Good

> I went to the library and found Bossypants just sitting there on the shelf for the taking. Mind you, it was the large print edition, but I’ve been on the waiting list for this book for months, so I’m thrilled. I also found a Vince Flynn book I hadn’t read (I hope!) and another good sounding book. Hoping this pushes me out of my reading slump.  I’m currently reading The Poisonwood Bible, but it’s still too early to determine if I like it or not.
> We booked our camping trip for the summer!  Sure, it’s 9 months away, but at least I’ve got something to look forward to.
> Scorch went to bed early tonight, so the Hubs and I got to spend some one on one time with the Bean.  Even if she is a pain in the butt, she’s pretty darn awesome and it’s fun to watch her shine.
> I didn’t gag, freak out, or run out of the room crying when Scorch got sick so I am feeling like a Responsible Parent.

Here’s hoping that tomorrows good outweighs the bad again!

Finding Our New Normal

Standard

Today marked the first day of our 2nd full week with the kids in school.  This new normal is being worn like a shirt that doesn’t quite fit.  We don’t not like it- Scorch loves school, the Bean is starting to and I’m enjoying having the house to myself- but it doesn’t feel quite right yet.  I’m sure that’ll come with time, but right now the mornings are still a tad too rushed, I’m still trying to find the best way to work around the kid’s school schedule and the kids are flat out tired at the end of the night.

Monday’s are our most fun night and our most tiring. I work 6 am – 2:45 pm so I don’t have to work after I pick the kids up.  The weather has been great, so the kids and I go to the park for an hour before going to swim lessons.  After lessons, we get home around 5:30, the kiddos have their baths and we all eat dinner so we can start bed time around 6:45.  Tonight the kids were more cranky then usual thanks to them waking up at 5:30 am, so I did what any smart mom would do to get us though the last few minutes before bedtime.  I showed my kids YouTube videos of cats doing funny things.  This one was our favorite– Scorch laughed so hard he got the hiccups.

Then I gave them the last bits of the homemade brownies we snagged from my parents last night and read Alfred’s NoseIt’s a book about a dog, Alfred, who doesn’t like his tiny little pug nose and the fact that his tongue sticks out, so he decided to disguise himself.  The pictures are awesome and we all laughed so hard we had to read it again when the Hubs came home from work.

All in all a great night, I just can’t wait until this starts feeling routine.

*****

Completely random and off topic, but the Hubs and I went to the movies this weekend and saw Warrior.  I didn’t know anything about it except that it’s about two brothers who are Mixed Martial Arts fighters, so I had no idea what to expected.  Both the Hubs and I were completely blown away- we loved it!  There is a fat ton of MMA action in the movie but the stories were so well down and the fighting sequences, while brutal, were amazing.  It may be the best movie we’ve seen all year and we see a lot of movies!

Happy Campers

Standard

This poor neglected blog.  I hate going this long between posts, but at least this time I have a legitimate excuse- we were on vacation!  And not just any vacation, but the vacation I look forward to more then any other all year long.  We were camping.

I know, right? Camping- that is the vacation enjoy the most?  The Hubs and I have been to some amazing places both in the US and abroad and, yes, camping is my favorite in terms of pure relaxation and enjoyment.

Home Sweet Home

It helps that we camp with pros (and that the camp ground has indoor plumbing and hot showers).  We have been going to this particular campground since I was itty bitty. Out of my 33 years on this earth, I think I’ve been on this particular vacation 27 of those years.  My parents started going with my aunt and uncle and other family and friends when I was a year old and they just kept going back every year.  At it’s craziest, the trip would include 7 families, 14 kids and a handful of dogs.  Things are bit more subdued now- my kids and my niece are the only little ones around, but that’s just fine.  Scorch camped for the first time at 8 weeks old and the Bean at 3 weeks old.  Some years we rent a pop up camper and others we stay in a tent.

The most stressful decision of the day is whether we go to the beach before or after the kids naps and how many smores my kids can have before bed and still fall asleep.   Breakfast  (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage & toast) is eaten in our sweats and hoodies around the fire pit, lunch is had at the beach and dinner (burgers, ribs, steaks, chicken & even shrimp) is eaten around picnic tables when everyone is slightly sunburned and tired out from a day playing in the waves of the lake.

There are no TVs, no video games and no computers.  We bring board games, cards, ladder golf and bocce ball and the kids play basketball, football, baseball and lacrosse.  No one ever says that they are board or argues over which movie to watch.  There are 12 adults to 3 kids- a perfect ratio to ensure that the kids never get into too much trouble and one person isn’t spread too thin keeping an eye on them.  In short, it’s wonderful.

Too bad we have 350-some odd days until we go again!

Post Vacation Blues

Standard

There are fat ton of things I don’t like about coming home from vacation. The laundry.  Going through all my work emails. Grocery shopping because there isn’t a blessed things to eat in the house. Dealing with my very needy cats who just want to snuggle at 2 am right on your chest. Getting the sand out of my car.

But the thing I dislike the most is how much I miss my family when we get home.

While we’re on vacation, there is no schedule and no stress about bills to pay or calls to return. It’s just fun- you sleep until the kids wake you up, you spend your day at the beach, the kids nap for 2 hours, then you go back to the beach, eat ice cream for dinner and let the kids stay up much, much later then is smart.  And you have a wonderful time doing so!  You have no choice but to spend almost all your waking hours together and magically everyone gets along. The kids are at their best and there are no time outs (well…almost none) or fits thrown.

And them…bam! It’s over and you’re back to the hustle and bustle of real life. Schedules and bedtimes and to-do lists that don’t include  “dig for sea shells” or “sleep late” on them.   Thankfully the life we had to return to is a good one, but it still doesn’t mean I don’t miss the magic of the beach.

Good thing I still have 400+ photos to go through to remind me of the fun we had. 😉

The Ultimate Scarifice

Standard

As my day marches along, I keep a little catalog of what to blog about during the day in my head.  Something funny the Bean said (her response after I told her “Yes, dear.” was to tell me “I not a deer, I a persons.”) or a question I have about Scorch (is 5 years old an appropriate age to watch some of the Y-7 cartoons like The Avengers?), a personal victory or just a universally funny parenting story.

But today I can’t get this story about of my head.  A 24-year old police officer was killed in the line of duty not to far from where I live.  He was a married father of an 18 month old.  That in and of itself is horrific.  Then I read how his pregnant wife, upon hearing the news, went into labor and had their baby.  She had her precious baby knowing all the while that her husband was dead.  Right there? That’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

So my amusing stories are going to have to wait a day or two because I can’t get the Wyman family out of my head today.  If you’re the praying time, please send some their way.

Bright & Sunny

Standard

The winters up here are long and dreary- full of white, dingy browns and grey.  It can be beautiful in its own way, but it’s so dull to look at day in and day out.

Spring was also a little slow to start up here- full of rain, cold weather and grey skies.  Then- BAM- summer hit last week and suddenly its all sunshine and warm temps!

There is so much I love about summer- the BBQs, the corn on the cob & the watermelon, the late nights on the deck watching the sun go down and the last minute ice cream runs. But my most favorite thing is the return of color!

The blues of the pool and the sky.  The green grass.  The pink and purple sunsets.  The hot, yellow sunshine.  The orange umbrella.  The kiddos tan skin (despite, yes, twice daily application of sunscreen) and the emergence of their blond hair.  I love it all and I’m so glad to have color back in my life again!

Falling like Dominos

Standard

On Saturday we belated held Scorch’s birthday party.  We had to delay it a while because of the Virus from Hell – something that Scorch was not happy about.  Have you ever tried explaining to a 5 year old that he is not having his birthday party (read: not getting presents) for weeks because of an illness?  I don’t recommend it.

But finally, finally everyone in my house was healthy and Party Day dawned hot and sunny.  Scorch had a great t-ball game earlier in the day, the kids took great naps and the guest all arrived on time.  We had a fantastic evening full of family, friends, great food, cake and, yes, presents.  By the time everyone left around 9:30, I was happily exhausted.  Just as my Mother-in-Law, the Hubs and I were heading to bed, the Hubs said, “I don’t feel good.”

Are. You. Kidding?

I quietly said a quick prayer that the Hubs simply drank or ate too much and that was that.  It had been 5 full days since anyone in my house was sick- it couldn’t possibly be the Virus from Hell, right?  Wrong.  The Hubs started getting sick at 11:30 and kept going at least once an hour for 5 hours.

Now, that is awful for the Hubs- I felt terrible for him.  But, really, I felt more sorry for me and my mother-in-law (who was staying with us for the weekend) because the Hubs is the loudest puker *ever.*  There is absolutely no sleeping in a house this small when the Hubs is getting sick unless you’re in your own room with the door closed and a sound machine on, which the kids were.  But my mother-in-law and I weren’t so lucky, so we got to experience exactly what the Hubs was going through.  He’s so loud that Crazy, our dog, was freaking out.  She thought it was thunder every time the Hubs got sick, so we had to sedate her to get her through this ordeal.

The Hubs had my pity all through out the night, but I’m sorry to report he didn’t have my patience. I found myself thinking about the cost of hotel rooms (for either him or us, I didn’t care), asking the Hubs to go down in the basement with Crazy, the cats and our tiny speck of a half bathroom that Hubs barely fits into to get sick and, finally, smothering the Hubs when he got back to bed to put us all out of our misery.  But, because I’m clearly Wife of the Year material, I didn’t do any of the above and we all got through this.

Here we are 3 days out and the Hubs is still wiped out- he hasn’t left the house since Saturday.  I’m obsessively following him around with my Clorox Wipes, wiping down everything he’s touched.  It’s been 2 weeks since the Virus from Hell hit this house and I’m still standing and I intend to keep in that way. Wish me luck.
