Boring & extraordinary

Standard

So lately my life has neither been wicked or crazy, although it has been slightly awesome in that nothing-has-broken-no-one-has-died sorta way.  This past week has just been exhausting as we settle back into our new normal of school and basketball and swim lessons and homework and fall temperatures and birthday parties.  All of which are good, good things- they just all hit at once.

Scorch continues to love school with a fiery passion and is as happy as a lark to get out of bed each morning and get going!  The Bean, on the other hand, needs to be dragged out of bed most mornings and usually starts crying about going to school right around the time we pull into the parking lot.  In case you were wondering, it is loads of fun to drag a crying 5 year old across a parking lot, across the street and into her classroom every day, thank you very much. *sigh*  Thankfully she’s fine 2 minute after we leave (I peek in on her most mornings) and each afternoon when I got to pick her up, she runs away from me because she wants to stay and play.

We are trying to eek out every ray of sunshine and speck of warmth that we can from Mother Nature because fall is quickly approaching, with winter waiting in the wings.  While I miss the sun being up when I leave the house early every morning, for 2 weeks I was treated to the most gorgeous sunrises on my way home from the gym.  I was pulling over every single morning just to capture the pink skies on my phone because they were awe-inspiring.  I mean, have you ever..?!

I haven’t read a really compelling book in a long time. I’m in the middle of Dan Brown’s Inferno but right now I’m annoyed / depressed by it. Annoyed because in the copy I have from the library, random words/passages are bolded for emphasis by the author/publisher. If I’m not smart enough to place my own emphasis while reading, well then, I have no business reading at all.  And depressed because the book talks at length about how the world is going to hell in a hand basket due to over population sooner rather than later.  Not exactly bedtime reading material. Next on my to-read list is The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes, so here’s hoping that’s better. I have, however, managed to watch both seasons of Scandal in the past 3 weeks. Make of that what you will. 😉

So, that’s the state of us and our average, normal, extraordinary life! How’s your life?

Horsing Around

Standard

We only have a little over 3 weeks until school starts, which means the Hubs and I have hit that “Holy Crap!” stage where we’re starting to feel the pressure of fitting in everything we wanted to do in a really short period of time.  That’s why I spent over an hour last night googling various hotels at the ocean to see what I could find. A tip: don’t wait until 2 weeks before you want to go to the beach to look for lodging. It becomes either an exercise in futility OR an exercise that reminds you how you really wish you were independently wealthy.

In the spirit of seizing the day, we spent a very fun evening out and about tonight.  First, we went to a friend’s house to visit with the polo ponies that live in their backyard.

Yes, the Bean is wearing my shoes. Some battles I don’t pick.

This was the kid’s first time being that close to horses and they were enamored- it was awesome! I have been debating getting them signed up for horse back riding lessons and this sealed the deal for me.

After we got done playing with the horses, we headed to a local nature center to see the Reptile Man.  This guy is a semi-celebrity locally- we’ve seen him at parties, nature places, at the kid’s school, etc- with all his many reptiles. Snakes, alligators, lizards and tortoises.   It’s not my cup of tea, but Scorch thought having a 6 foot long boa draped over his shoulders was the coolest thing ever so I’m calling the whole evening a success!

A Summer’s Day

Standard

I hate coming to my blog just to complain, which is why things have been quiet. Life over the past week has been… challenging. You know, sick husband, acts of nature destroying some of our property, summer colds, crazy schedules.  The usual.

*sigh*

At one point last week, I just sat there and literally started counting my (many) blessing out loud because for the past few weeks it seems like if we didn’t have bad luck, we didn’t have any luck at all.  Thankfully life goes on and what seemed overwhelming and nausea-inducing last week seems manageable and  under control this week.  Perhaps the day-long wine tour on Saturday with some of my favorite relatives to celebrate my brother’s upcoming wedding helped!

It certainly didn’t hurt!

Now life’s getting back to normal. The Hubs is hanging in there and I’m bound and determined to suck out every ounce of fun from our last 3 weeks of summer because this time is going by way too fast for me! I checked out library books today and they are due back in September- I almost choked. The Heat’s aren’t going down without a fight- just as soon as we all stop blowing our noses/coughing up a lung.

This.

Every year around Feb & March, I question why we moved back to NY.  Winter has been going on for 4 to 5 months already and during those short Feb days, it seems like it’s going to end. The snow is all slushy and brown, there isn’t even a hint of new buds on the trees and you feel like summer is eons away.  The weather in Maryland was so much more temperate in the winter- we would wear short sleeves the majority of the time in March and things were turning green everywhere! Why in the world did we ever move?

But then we have nights like tonight. Nights that we spend at my  parents house with extended and immediate family, watching my kids play with their cousin, talking about my brother’s upcoming wedding and laughing over what terrors we were as kids as my parents and aunts share stories from our past.  From 70 years old all way down to 2 years old, we enjoy a delicious meal, wonderful company and hysterical tales and I think “This. This is why we moved back home.”

And I’m so thankful that we did.

Sometimes on Monday (or any other day, for that matter), all I’m good for is thought fragments. Today is one of those days:

> I sent Beaner to school today wearing: leggings, a skirt, a sleeveless Hawaiian print dress over her skirt (so you could only see like 1/2 of the skirt) and a cream colored crocheted sweater that went down to her knees (covering her dress and skirt), two braids in her hair AND a sparkly purple headband. And it wasn’t even wacky dress day- it was just how she chose to dress herself.

> For almost 7 months now, the Bean has been asking to color her hair. She 1) is four and 2) goes to a private school, so I said no. But I did agree that when school was over (this week), she could put a few color streaks in her hair (done via our hairdresser).  Nothing obnoxious- it comes out in about 10 washes and it won’t damage her hair at all.  Like many things, I swear I told the Hubs about this, but he says this week is the first he’s hearing about it and he’s throwing a fit.  He and I have very different philosophies- I say hair can always grow back/be changed, he says says I’m setting the Bean up for a life time of delinquency. We’ll see who wins this one.

> This morning, as I’m looking down our stairs at my dog, she looked right back up at me and promptly peed on our landing, all over the Bean’s boots. After calling her a few bad names, I put her outside, cleaned up and went to the vet for a few vials to collect her urine in tomorrow morning. I need a dog with a UTI like I need a hole in the head.

> Scorch has decided to start keeping a diary/journal.  If we needed more proof that he was my kid, there you go.

> He’s also started sneaking in extra time to read. I had to explain to him last night that if he was going to read after lights out, he at least had to stop laughing his butt off at Bad Kitty so loudly because that’s a dead giveaway.

> It’s officially driveway chalk season- which may be my favorite season of all.

End of Year Crazies

Standard

Is it wrong that the last things my kids hear before bed every night is “Good night, I love you & I don’t want to see you again until morning.”? Because 9 nights out of 10, that is what they hear.  Here’s hoping their health insurance as adults covers therapy.

~*~*~

I forgot about the particular brand of crazy the end of the school year brings for the kids. They have about 2 more weeks of school left (!?!?!?!) and it seems like there is some special event every other day gearing up to it- parades! concerts! art shows! field trips! and the list goes on and on. They are having a blast and we’re so very thankful for the  amazing year both kids had, but all this excitement makes for hyped up, slightly anxious, entirely exhausted kids at home.

All I have to say right now is thank God for sports that keep them busy, early bedtimes and lilacs (because I really love lilacs).

Saying Screw It & Soaking It Up

Standard

Good lord, I love me some spring time. After a long, cold winter, I love seeing the green pop up, the temperatures rise and everything coming back to life.  Everything- including our schedule.  On any given week between now and the end of school we have 4 baseball games a week and a concert/therapy session/swim lessons/whatever. So basically we’ve moving and shaking 3-4 weeknights every week which is fun. But exhausting.  In order to work, pick up the kids, cook, eat, clean up, attend said event and get my kids to bed at a reasonable hour, our nights are scheduled down to the minute. Like, if I’m off by 5 minute from when I should have started dinner, instead of eating a home cooked meal, we’re getting McDonald’s drive through on the way to a game.  That’s fine every once in a while, but that’s not the way I want my kids to eat daily.

So what I’m saying is we’re busy.  Which makes it all that much sweeter when we say screw it (or, I say screw it, the kids don’t say that), throw the schedule out the window and just enjoy a beautiful day. Which is what we did today.  First, we made friends.  Well, the kids made friends. I stood 5 feet behind my kids and screamed at them not to put their fingers inside the fence because that swan was going to chomp them off (I loathe birds).

Then I let the kids play in the stream. Love, love, love that they are old enough that I don’t have to shadow their every move.  They are smart enough to not try to actively drown themselves and the worst thing that will happen is they get wet.

The rain is supposed to start tomorrow and after 2+ weeks without it, we do need it. Knowing that it’s coming made soaking up the sunshine today all that more sweet.

Mom! Mommy! Mommy! Hi.

Standard

Before I had kids, my friend Jo and I would frequently hit up a local walking trail with the dogs.  It was a great way to exercise and get all the latest gossip.  Well, Jo and I are now have two kids apiece- 3 of whom are all old enough to go for an easy hike.  So we threw her youngest into a carrier and took the other three out on the trail.  In my mind, I figured the older kids would run ahead and entertain themselves and Jo and I could get back to our gossiping ways.

Yeah, clearly I’ve never spent any time with my kids before ever.

The walking trail borders a few small lakes and streams. So I spent the whole 2.5 mile walk telling my kids- repeatedly, every 10 steps- why they couldn’t go in the water. Evidently the fact that part of the lakes/streams were still frozen wasn’t good enough.  Nor was the fact they had on sneakers, not rain boots, and if they got their feet wet they’d have to walk back in wet shoes.

All I could think about was this scene from the The Family Guy where the poor mom just wants one freaking minute alone. And it doesn’t happen.

I mean- come on. Would you want to go swimming in that water?! Crazy kids.

Which One?

Standard

The Bean picks out her PJs every night- which typically means she wears anything other than clothes that are meant to be slept in. Tonight she decided she wanted to wear yellow to bed, so she pulled out two yellow t-shirts- one with butterflies and one with flip flops on it.

Mom- which one should I wear to bed?

The one with the butterflies.

No, Mom- which one should I wear?

I said, I like the ones with the butterflies.

Mom, I said- which shirt should I wear?! (she’s clearly exasperated with me at this point judging by her “you’re such a dummy” attitude directed at me)

Umm, the one with the flip flops?

Great, I’ll wear that one!

Why did she even ask my opinion when clearly there was only one right answers?

~*~*~

I noted the other night how exhausted I was, thinking it was the early morning workouts taking their toll. Yeah, turned out I had strep throat. I didn’t even know adults could get that! Regardless, it completely kicked my butt and I have never been more thankful that my kids are older then I was yesterday as the Hubs was stuck at work and I couldn’t get out of bed.  My kids pulled together their own dinner, left me alone and even put themselves to bed when I told them to. It wasn’t pretty but we all managed and, thanks to the power of antibiotics, I woke up today feeling much, much better.

Enjoy It While It Lasts

Standard

Ever since Scorch was 4, we’ve been saying that we’re going to take him skiing. But we never have. Want to know why? It’s because I hate being out in the cold. Every time the kids ask to go sledding (in our backyard, no less), I cringe because I don’t want to stand out in the cold.  I may be living in the wrong area of the country.

But sometimes the weather gods smile on us and this weekend was one of those times. March is a fickle, fickle month in NY- you’ll get days of snow mixed with with tantalizing glimpses of the spring to come. It’s both wonderful and maddening.  Saturday it was in the high 40s with full on bright sunshine and you would have thought we were back in FL with the way we reacted. At one point I brought out a lawn chair and sat in it with my jeans and my winter jacket on just to soak up some of the sunshine.

093

The best part of the day, hands down, was the sledding. The snow left over was not only thick enough, but it was also slick enough for the kids to go nuts down the hill. Normally when we go sledding we last about 45 minutes before we start to freeze, but this time around we were out for over 2 hours without any of the normal warm clothing needed- no snow pants or hats or scarves or long johns. Just our regular clothes, jackets and some gloves for the Bean. It was pure perfection!

Old Man Winter can leave any time now, but if he is going to stay, I hope he stays just like this!
